Description
Maternal and Child Health (MCH) initiatives continue to be challenged by a myriad of adaptive challenges, also known as complex problems that impact the health and wellbeing of the families and communities they serve. The aim of the online short course is to offer a roadmap and tools to MCH practitioners and teams that strengthen leadership and capacity to better address wicked public health problems or adaptive challenges. The five-module short course is inspired by the I+PSE (Individual plus Policy, System, and Environment) Conceptual Framework for Action. Teams will be introduced to systems thinking and reflection as key resources in working collaboratively with others to strengthen direct services and to co-lead policy, system, and environmental change. The short course will explore how teams can apply a determinants of health lens to assessing MCH populations and community health and using the information to design and implement multidimensional strategies for optimal impact. MCH Teams will explore a spectrum of monitoring and evaluation activities and opportunities for operationalizing the I+PSE Conceptual Framework for Action within their organizations. The online short course allows teams to work at their own pace and includes recorded webinars, individual and team activities, case studies, resources and tools, and reflection. At the end of the course, MCH teams will have developed strategies and/or action plans which will further build Title V MCH leadership, capacity, practice-based evidence, and community impact. ## CPEUs and a Certificate of Completion are offered at the end of the I+PSE Short Course.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the I+PSE Online Short Course, MCH teams should be able to:
- Apply systems thinking and reflection to address wicked problems, including health disparities and inequities in the MCH population.
- Assess MCH needs using a determinants of health lens.
- Describe the benefits of combining direct services with policy, system, and environmental approaches to address MCH priorities.
- Develop multidimensional I+PSE strategies informed by the determinants of health assessment.
- Prepare a mixed methods monitoring and evaluation plan to determine collective impact.
- Integrate I+PSE tools and resources at the initiative, organization, and community levels.
Audience
The I+PSE Online Short Course is designed for practitioners working in maternal and child health arenas. Participants may include Title V MCH Trainees, Western Regional MCH National Leadership Network members, Title V MCH staff at state and local agencies and their partners, nutrition and dietetic students, and other practitioners working in public health and healthcare.

Structure of the Course
- A Pre-Course Survey, (approximately 20 mins) which leads directly into the Short Course materials:
- A video introduction, followed by 5 principal course Modules, broken up into a total of fifteen (15) individual video sessions with downloadable slides and materials.
- Upon completion, there will be a Post-Course Examination and finally, an Evaluation of the Course itself (approximately 20 mins, combined).
