It is difficult to measure the complete financial cost of a special diet. Below is one article written for a patient with Celiac disease.  Because a family may be interested in using the Gluten-free Casein-free diet for their children with ASD’s it is important for them to be aware of the costs associated with such a diet. The purpose of providing information here about this diet is to allow for an understanding of the GFCF diet, it is not to endorse the use of the diet as a cure ASD’s.  Please refer to readings on the efficacy of diets page for further information. http://flickr.com/photos/efleming/

Curreton P. The Gluten-free diet: Can Your Patient Afford It?

Written by Carol Rees Parrish, R.D., M.S. describing the cost of the special foods in a Gluten-free diet for those diagnosed with Celiac disease.

CONCLUSION
Compliance to the gluten-free diet yields the benefit of both disease prevention and improved quality of life.
The diet is complex and expensive. The role of the health care provider to assist their patient in overcoming the many barriers to compliance includes keeping treatment obtainable for all income levels, by reducing the cost of the diet.
